Every material, intentionally chosen.
We set out with clear intentions when choosing materials for the Shorebird Chair, balancing both performance and environmental responsibility.
Where we started
The Non-negotiables
Before we picked a single material, we wrote down what every one of them had to be. Nothing made it into the chair without checking all four boxes.
- 01Kind to the places you bring it.
- 02Ready for years in the elements.
- 03Responsibly sourced.
- 04Easy to repair.
01 · The frame
Grade-A Teak, FSC-Certified
The heart of the tree, from a forest that's cared for. It's the same wood boatbuilders have trusted on their decks for centuries.
What Grade-A means
Teak is graded by where it's cut from the tree. Grade-A comes from the heartwood at the very center of a mature trunk, and only a small part of each log qualifies. It's the densest, richest teak there is, with a tight, even grain and a warm golden color.
Why it matters
The heartwood is where teak keeps most of its natural oils. Those oils are what let it live outdoors, standing up to sun and salt air without heavy chemical treatments.
What FSC-Certified means
The Forest Stewardship Council independently checks that a forest is managed responsibly so that trees are replanted and not over-harvested.
02 · The seat
100% Cotton Canvas
Feels great to the touch, and treads lightly on the environment.
What it is
Canvas is a durable, tightly woven fabric, the same kind of fabric sailors once trusted for their sails. Ours is 100% cotton canvas with the perfect balance of form and function that provides great support while feeling soft to the touch.
Why it's right for the chair
Cotton canvas breathes, so it stays comfortable in the sun and feels good against bare skin. It softens the more you use it. Every canvas is finished with UPF 30+ sun protection, and even the little logo tag on the back is cotton.
Made to be swapped
When a canvas has given you its best years, it slides off the frame without tools and a fresh one goes on. The rest of the chair keeps going.
It gets better every summer you own it.
03 · The cleat and fittings
Marine-Grade Hardware
Made to the standard of boat hardware, so it's right at home near the water.
What marine-grade means
Marine-grade hardware is built to live around salt water. Ours is marine-grade stainless steel with a brass finish, so you get the warmth of brass with the strength of stainless.
Custom made, inspired by sailing
Most of the hardware on the chair, cleat included, was custom built for it, with a nod to the fittings you'd find on a sailboat.
On a boat, a cleat holds a line exactly where you want it, so we built the recline around one. Pull the rope to the angle that feels right and the cleat holds it there all afternoon.
Built to last
Every fitting can be replaced on its own, so one worn part never retires the chair.
Built to last in the elements, season after season.
04 · The rope
100% Recycled Polyester
Rope made from plastic that's already been used once, given a second job.
What it is
The rope used in the Shorebird Chair is 100% recycled polyester, made from post-consumer waste, like old fishing nets.
Why it's right for the chair
It holds its color in strong sun and barely stretches, which is exactly what you want in a recline. Set your angle and it stays put.
No new plastic
05 · The box
100% Curbside-Recyclable Box
Every detail considered, right down to the box your chair arrives in.
What it's made of
The box was designed to nest the Shorebird Chair inside with a custom cardboard insert that elevates and protects the chair in transit. It’s 100% curbside recyclable.
Ready when it arrives
Your chair ships fully assembled. Lift it out, unfold it and it's ready for the afternoon.
Where it goes next
When you're done with it, flatten the box and put it out with your recycling. All of it goes in the curbside bin.
From your door to the recycling bin with ease.
